Wine Bottle Opener

This product has been crafted to harmonize with both the contours of the user’s hand and the curves of a wine bottle. Through an intensive design process, its shape was thoughtfully developed to ensure a seamless interaction between the bottle and the hand.
The opener’s color and form were carefully chosen to complement the aesthetic of any wine bottle, making it a versatile addition to any setting. Designed to stand out rather than be tucked away, this piece was envisioned as a statement accessory for the kitchen.
Its form and presence elevate it beyond a typical kitchen utensil, bringing a sense of ceremony and sophistication to the wine-opening experience.

Design Process

In this school assignment I was tasked with creating a hand tool that utilized form rather than mechanics for function. I aimed to create a tool that functioned smoothly while also presenting an aesthetic. I decided to make a wine opener due to its adaptability in form and ceremonial significance it presents in the home. First experimentations included sketch models of various forms that comfortably fit the hand and bottle.

After researching comfortability patterns and ergonomic hand placement I then moved into sketching out possible model shapes.

With these idea sketched out, I then created foam look-like models to develop a better understanding of the shapes chosen.

From here I presented my sketches and models to potential users and asked them to rank each models’ innovativeness, utility, and desirability. This information would help me understand the users perspective as well as where each model could improve.

Using this feedbacK, I then developed two pre-final designs. These designs combined my previous research of comfortable hand placement with mirrored curves to present a functional and ceremonial object.

Final Design

My final design comprised of a symmetrical matte black opener, made to fit the aesthetic of any wine bottle on any occasion.
